- Description:
- Georgette Beauparlant Bérubé was a lifelong resident of Lewiston, ME, and served in the State Legislature for 26 years, the longest of any other Maine woman. Georgette won her first election to the State Legislature in 1970, despite considerable backlash from Democratic Party elite. Georgette was an independently minded democrat who often voted with Republicans on fiscal issues. In 1982 Georgette became the first woman to run for Governor in the state of Maine, however her bid for the seat was unsuccessful. Georgette was a strong advocate for Franco-American heritage as a legislator and community member. As a politician, she supported the causes of injured workers, and labor more generally, social services and business. As a member of the state legislature she served on the Natural Resources and Public Utilities committees, and served as chairman of the legislature’s Audit and Program Review Committee.
