African American in Portland fireman's uniform

Title:
African American in Portland fireman's uniform
Description:
The picture is probably of William Ruby who was accepted as a member of Steam Fire Engine Machigonne 1. Albeit, Black firemen in Maine were unusual. In 1876 there was a controversy in Damariscotta because a Black man had joined the new fire department. William Ruby was appointed as a pipeman, the enviable position of controlling the nozzle of the hose line.
